What Does It Mean to Follow Jesus?
To follow Jesus means refusing to follow influences and voices that don’t lead to or reflect Jesus. It requires accepting His leadership and influence over others, even when it goes against cultural norms or popular opinion.
The Story of John the Baptist’s Martyrdom
John the Baptist faced imprisonment and ultimately death because he chose to speak truth to power. He confronted King Herod about his unlawful marriage to his brother’s wife, Herodias. Despite Herod’s respect for John, Herodias’s grudge led to John’s execution when her daughter’s dance pleased Herod enough to grant her any request.

Life Application
This week, consider these questions:
- What costs am I currently paying to follow Jesus?
- Are there areas where I’m compromising to avoid paying the cost?
- How can I better fix my eyes on Jesus when facing opposition?
Challenge: Identify one area where you’ve been hesitant to fully follow Jesus due to potential costs. Commit to following His way in that area this week, regardless of the consequences.
Remember, while following Jesus has a real cost, He promises that He is worth it. Keep your eyes fixed on Him and endure, knowing that you’re not alone in this journey – believers worldwide are running the same race alongside you.
