However, there&#8217;s more to discipleship than what appears on the surface &#8211; there&#8217;s also a cost. It requires accepting His leadership and influence over others, even when it goes against cultural norms or popular opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Story of John the Baptist&#8217;s Martyrdom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>John the Baptist faced imprisonment and ultimately death because he chose to speak truth to power. He confronted King Herod about his unlawful marriage to his brother&#8217;s wife, Herodias. Despite Herod&#8217;s respect for John, Herodias&#8217;s grudge led to John&#8217;s execution when her daughter&#8217;s dance pleased Herod enough to grant her any request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Costs of Following Jesus Today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The costs of following Jesus can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Loss of popularity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strained family relationships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lost friendships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workplace challenges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social rejection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some parts of the world, physical persecution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does Jesus Say About the Cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus was clear about the cost of following Him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;Take up your cross daily&#8221; (Luke 9:23)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Blessed are you when people hate you&#8221; (Luke 6:22)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;In this world you will have trouble&#8221; (John 16:33)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Is Jesus Worth the Cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the challenges, Jesus promises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Acknowledgment before the Father<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eternal life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peace in Him<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ultimate victory over the world<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life Application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, consider these questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What costs am I currently paying to follow Jesus?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are there areas where I&#8217;m compromising to avoid paying the cost?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can I better fix my eyes on Jesus when facing opposition?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Challenge: Identify one area where you&#8217;ve been hesitant to fully follow Jesus due to potential costs. Commit to following His way in that area this week, regardless of the consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, while following Jesus has a real cost, He promises that He is worth it.
