This was a call to the deepest kind of discipleship and relationship &#8211; similar to the difference between going to the movies and getting married. It was an invitation to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Know Jesus deeply<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be transformed by Jesus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give your whole self to Jesus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop an ongoing relationship with Him<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Was Jesus&#8217;s Interaction with Tax Collectors So Controversial?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tax collectors were among the most despised people in Jewish society because:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They worked for Rome, the oppressive ruling power<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They were seen as betrayers of their own people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They were known for dishonesty and overcharging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They were considered morally corrupt and untrustworthy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Did Jesus Challenge Social Barriers?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus demonstrated radical inclusion by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Directly calling Levi to follow Him<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eating at Levi&#8217;s house with other tax collectors and &#8220;sinners&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refusing to care about social status or reputation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prioritizing people&#8217;s need for Him over their past or present situation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does This Mean for Modern Disciples?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To follow Jesus&#8217;s example, we must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Form relationships with those different from ourselves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examine our own prejudices and &#8220;inner Pharisee&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be willing to cross social boundaries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focus on people&#8217;s need for Jesus rather than their status or past<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can We Make Disciples Today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple yet effective methods include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sharing meals together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building authentic relationships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating safe spaces for conversation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allowing the Holy Spirit to work through natural connections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life Application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, challenge yourself to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify someone you might normally avoid or judge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take a step to build a relationship with them (perhaps over a meal)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask yourself these questions:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who have I been avoiding because of their lifestyle or choices?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What prejudices do I need to confront in myself?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can I create space for relationships with people different from me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Am I willing to risk my reputation to follow Jesus&#8217;s example?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, discipleship isn&#8217;t about having all the right answers or being perfectly prepared &#8211; it&#8217;s about being willing to follow Jesus&#8217;s example of radical love and inclusion while allowing the Holy Spirit to work through genuine relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following Jesus: Breaking Down Social Barriers and Making Disciples Jesus consistently demonstrated a radical approach to relationships that challenged social norms and religious expectations.
